There are as many different home security systems as there are shades of blue.
While you may not see commercials on TV for CCTV cameras, you'll see them all the time for home security systems.
Major vendors put together packages of home security systems which include 24-hour monitoring.
So not only will there be an alarm, but someone will always hear it even if you're not there.
Monitoring is just one small component of today's home security systems however, and it isn't necessary.
The three major components of home security systems are as follows:
Alarm - There are two types of alarms, auditory and silent. An auditory alarm will usually be a siren of some sort that will wake you if you are sleeping, alert your neighbors, frighten your pets and the burglars in your home. Home security systems using an auditory alarm are pretty standard and do a great job at securing one's home. Home security systems also use silent alarms. This alarm can trigger without the intruder knowing. This way, the alarm sounds while the intruder goes about his business and is none-the-wiser when the cavalry shows up to haul him away. Banks use silent alarms to prevent crooks from knowing that the police are coming. The same technology can be used in your home. Sophistication ranges from small self-contained alarms, to complex multizone systems that display color-coded warnings on computer monitored output systems. Response - Your home security systems response can differ. A typical response for home security systems is to alert the local authorities. That way they can come and you won't need to pick up the phone to call them. If there's a fire, home security systems can alert the firemen. There are dialer systems that can be attached to home security systems to perform either of these tasks. It can even call you if you aren't home. Alternative responses for home security systems might be turning on lights in the home, locking doors or in the movies it might flood the home with nerve gas to paralyze the intruders so the police can get there. In the first portion, we talked about active monitoring which means that when something happens a trigger is set. The infrared beams trigger something. The magnetic sensors trigger something. Now we'll talk about passive monitoring for home security systems such as CCTV cameras, IP cameras and security DVR's. Passive Monitoring - This is passive because it doesn't actually trigger a response. A security camera will record the burglar while he's in your home. It will record his face, sometimes even his voice and whatever he did while violating your precious privacy. It won't however, trigger an alarm. Does that make it useless? Of course not! Passive monitoring is great for two reasons. Most home security systems utilizing this will plug the feed from each camera into your TV. That way you can turn on your TV and see what's going on in every room of your home. Image your alarm went off in the middle of the night. Would you want to get up and wander around blindly while you hunted for a burglar you may not even want to find? What about if you wanted to find the safest way out of your home without running into an intruder. How would you do that? Home security systems with security cameras can show you which rooms are safe and which ones aren't by showing you exactly where the intruders are in your home. Additionally, you can use the recordings as evidence to prosecute the invaders after the fact. This is why comprehensive home security systems utilize both active and passive monitoring.
